The company said it had also received an order for 2,368.25 kms from Gayatri Projects Ltd. for supply of conductors to the MPPKVVCL project.

The institute, which has already identified a couple of locations in association with state government agencies, proposes to set up a cluster of laboratories and other infrastructure in an area of 200 acres. The proposed facility, which will be one-of-its-kind in the country, would be a major expansion of its current activities in the area of ocean technology applications, including deep sea technology and ocean mining.

The institute is now working on low temperature thermal desalination, deepsea technologies, remotely operable vehicles and deepsea submersibles, ocean observation systems and ocean acoustics, among others. The facility will be designed to undertake all the major programmes, including submersibles and gas hydrates, marine sensors and electronics, energy, coastal engineering research and marine biotechnology, which require actual working in sea conditions.

State government’s nodal agency APInvest CEO Pratap Madireddy said the institute was planning to spend about Rs 250 crore to build initial infrastructure. Apart from seeking land near the Indian Space Research Organisation’s satellite launch facility (SHAR), the institute has also sought another 50 acres for housing administration and residential facilities for scientists and other staff working.

Established in 1993, the institute has rapidly grown its activities on its 50-acre campus in Chennai and now wants to scale up various research initiatives that were taken up in smaller laboratory conditions. For example, though the institute has gained substantial experience in desalination, more optimisation is required in components that go into thermal cycle and vacuum systems for large-scale production and commercialisation of these applications. This is possible only if the institute sets up a seafront facility housing a desalination research laboratory.

It also proposes to set up a jetty and dedicated berthing facilities for various coastal research vessels manned by the institute at the new facility. At present, these are berthed at fishing harbours and main ports.

It will also undertake activities in development of prototype systems, validation of indigenously developed marine systems in the ocean, according to a proposal submitted to the state government by the institute.

Last year Apollo set up 200 stock keeping units to introduce 50 non-pharma FMCG products, including toothbrushes, toothpastes, lotions, creams, under the Apollo brand for retail.
“This helped us improve margins,” said Suneeta Reddy, director (finance), Apollo Hospitals.

Land has been acquired in six cities, including Thane, Trichy, Vizag, Nashik and Nellore, and construction work is due to start. “Till 2013, our list of Tier II cities is ready,” said Suneeta Reddy.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 16.93 crore for construction. The IITTM, an autonomous organisation of the ministry of tourism, Government of India is one of the premier institutes offering education, training, research and consultancy in tourism, travel and allied sectors since 1983.

The proposed institute in Nellore will offer a two year course with a unique blend of tourism and cargo specialisation as part of its postgraduate diploma in management. The idea behind the course is to tap growing opportunities in the areas of tourism operations, tourism marketing, air and shipping cargo management in the region.

The director of the IITTM, Ms Manjula Chowdhary, revealed this while interacting with media persons after taking part in a workshop on ‘Tourism Opportunities and Challenges’ at Geetanjali College, Muttukur road here on Thursday.

According to Ms Chowdhary, graduates in any stream are eligible to join the course and the last date for receiving applications is February 1. The entrance test will be conducted on February 27. Those qualified in CAT and MAT entrance tests can apply directly for enrolment and do not have to take the entrance test. The cost for the two years course is Rs 2 lakh and it can be paid in two instalments.

The IITTM has been providing Rs 2 crore towards development of infrastructure for colleges and polytechnics in government sector if they introduce a degree course in tourism management. Ms Chowdhary said that placement is assured for their students, pointing to opportunities across the globe in the tourism industry.

Earlier, the vice-chancellor of Vikrama Simhapuri University, Prof C.R. Visweswar Rao, dwelt at length on the historical importance of Nellore. The general manager of the HR wing of Krishnapatnam Port, Mr Satya Prakash, also spoke apart from professors of IITTM, Sandeep Kulashreshta and Nimit Chowdhary.

Handloom sector is a small scale industry and next to agriculture by the number of people depend on it. Venkatagiri and Patur are important handloom centres in the district noted for their traditional handcrafted fine cotton and silk sarees embrodied with pure zari.

Krishnapatnam is a major port and market center situated at a distance of 20 km. The port is expected to become a world-class deep-water port. Iron ore and granite are being exported from Krishna Patnam to other countries like China. One Railway line links it with Vekatachalam on main railway line. Tada is at a distance of 80 km from Nellore with new industrial ventures like the Adidas factory and Tata’s Leather park.

• Central government gave clearance to IFFCO fertilizer factory at Regadi Chelika near Nellore.
• Central government is also planning to set up a ‘Petro Chemical Terminal’ at Krishnapatnam.
• Construction work of two textile parks at Menakur near Venkatagiri/Nayudupeta is expected to start soon.
• IFFCO will soon set up an agriculture based food processing special economic zone (SEZ) in Nellore.
• Lord Swaraj Paul-led Caparo Group will invest Rs 3,500 crore to set up an auto Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and a car-cum-aerospace components manufacturing facility in the Nellore.
• RKKR Steels Limited, which has been involved in manufacturing and trading flat and long steel products, is expcted to invest Rs 6200 crores more to expand its SBQ steel plant at Ankulapatur(NH5-Chinthavaram – Port Road) in Nellore district.
• Hindusthan National Glass & Industries Ltd has come up with a proposal to establish a Rs 1,000-crore container glass and float glass manufacturing base in Naidupet of Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh.
• The construction of the float glass plant with a capacity of 600 tonnes a day will commence in early 2012 and is likely to be completed by 2014.
